business manager / owner
It is common to believe that people left-brained are logical, analytical, mathematical and black and white thinkers while the right-brained people tend to be artistic, visual, emotional and see in color. To some this is a theory, however I believe it to be factual. My sister and I are polar opposites. Brown hair/blonde hair, early riser/fashionably late, very organized/non-systematic, Accountant/Artist, (you get the point).
So, twenty years ago, when my sister asked me to start a business with her and leave my job, I responded with an excel spreadsheet on why 90% of start-ups fail within the first three years with clear concise bullet points. My right-brained sister naturally responded with an interactive Power-Point presentation that had music playing in the background. I was impressed enough that I left my job and here we are today. Left Brain Right Brain Theory at work…
Despite our contrasting styles, our differences complement our business model. We can sit in a meeting together and while our customer is talking, I am calculating costs in my mind and she is already telling them what she is visualizing. We get our two different sides working together. So myth or not Christine and I have just come to understand our strengths and weaknesses. Needless to say she never asks me for advice on a design.
